Left and right edges

What you should end up with

The two edges with red and orange are in place, on the left and right on top, matching the corners. After that only the middle-slice edges are left. Guides call this step 4b, or UL/UR.

How to do it

Find the two edges you need: the ones with red or orange. In the diagrams only they and the corners are in colour.
The goal: bring both edges down into the middle slice. How depends on where they are now.
When both are down, turn the top until the front corners show the colour opposite to the bottom front edge. If that edge shows red, the front corners are orange. Then do M2 and turn the top until the corners match the blocks.
Orientation stays safe: a U move is harmless while the top centre is yellow or white, and M or M' is followed by U2 and another such move.

Bring both edges down

One at the bottom front Turn the top so the other edge is at the top back. After the formula both are down.

M' U2 M'

One at the bottom back Turn the top so the other edge is at the top front. After the formula both are down.

M' U2 M

Both on top Turn the top so one edge is at the front and do M2. If the other was at the back, both are down now. If not, one is down: those are the cases above.

Put them in place

Both down: first option U sets the corners by the rule above, M2 lifts the edges, and U' returns the corners.

Both down: second option The same when the edges below are the other way round. The colour rule tells you which way to turn.
