Step 1 of 6
First block
What you should end up with
A 1×2×3 block in the bottom two layers of the left face: a centre, three edges and two corners. There are no formulas here: you build it by understanding it.
How to do it
- Look at the scramble and pick the block: white on the bottom and red on the left, as in the diagrams. You can vary the colours later.
- Any move is allowed, but do not rotate the whole cube: use wide moves such as r and u instead.
- Build the block in parts. Usually that is the bottom edge and two corner-edge pairs, or a 1×2×2 square and one pair. The ways are shown below.
- Plan ahead. Start by finding the moves up to the square, and look for the last pair while solving.

Tips
›Inserting a pair takes four moves at most and ends with F for the front pair or B for the back pair.
›A first target: the block in under 13 moves. Then under 10. Experienced solvers need under 9.
›Once the block stops taking many moves, try different colours on the bottom and left: more choices give shorter solutions.
