Step 1 of 6
The 2×2×2 block
What you should end up with
One corner and its three neighbouring edges are in place, along with three centres. In the diagrams that is the block at the bottom back left. That is 4 pieces out of 20.
How to do it
- Any of the eight corners will do, whichever is easiest. While learning, keep the same one: white on the bottom, red on the left, blue at the back.
- Join the corner with an edge into a pair. Separately, join a second edge with its centre.
- Join them into a 2×2×1 block, then add the last edge with its two centres.

Tips
›This step has no formulas: understanding comes with practice. Try different corners and compare where it takes fewer moves.
