Blindfolded solving

You look at the cube, memorise it, put on a blindfold and solve it without another look. Anyone who can solve a cube can do this: it takes 3 algorithms and about 20 letters in your head. Speed hardly matters here, attention does.

We teach the Old Pochmann method. Stefan Pochmann invented it, and nearly everyone starts with it: pieces go home one at a time, so there is almost no thinking during the solve.

StartLetters on the cube

How this is even possible

1 Label Every sticker has its own letter
2 Memorise Where each piece goes: a short list of letters
3 Solve One piece at a time: the others end up where they were

Why it is easier than it looks

›You do not memorise what the cube looks like. You memorise a list: about 12 letters for edges and 8 for corners.
›A piece goes home with the same formula every time. Blindfolded there is nothing you need to see: your hands do the setup, the swap and the undo.
›You can practise with your eyes open and the letters on paper. The blindfold comes at the very end.

What you need

›Being able to solve a cube and read formulas without slipping: R U R' U' and so on. Two of the three are the familiar T Perm and Ra Perm.
›A blindfold, or just closed eyes. In competition you bring your own.
›One grip for the whole section: white on top, green towards you, red on the right. Other Academy lessons hold yellow on top, but the guides to this method hold it this way.

How long it takes

The authors of a Russian book on the subject say a first success can come within the first days, and making the skill stick takes about two months on average. The first attempts often fail, and that is normal. Do not rush: here a mistake costs far more than an extra minute.

Where this comes from

The method was described by Stefan Pochmann, the teaching order and the two worked solves come from the J Perm guide, the competition rules from the WCA Regulations (version of April 1, 2026). Every formula and the memo rules were checked on a model cube: they solve thousands of random cubes, rare cases included. T Perm and Ra Perm are in the SpeedCubeDB base, and the corner swap is Y Perm without its first F and last F'. Real cubers have not read this section yet: if something is unclear, please tell us.
